Sunday Scribblings # – Sport

This weeks topic from Sunday Scribblings is sport

I have always had a love hate relationship with sport. In school I wasn’t very good at it, but loved cross country running. I always came in last and muddiest… but happy.

As an adult I did Shi Zen Do Karate for five years, and loved it. The only reason I stopped was I moved out of the area. I loved the mental discipline as much as the physical exercise, and met some pretty amazing people on route. Martial arts is full of big egos and humble brilliance. I was fortunate to find the latter in the club i trained in.

Now a have, excuse the pun, a running battle with… running. I love it, but getting out the door in the morning is a sacrifice, one i need to get back to (having been a slacker for two weeks).

What do i think about sport in general? It is a great thing. It brings people together, to watch or participate, it can be a great leveler and a provider of lessons for both the trainer and trainee.

In the Bible running is likened to the spiritual journey to God.

“All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step” (1 Corinthians 9)

When i go running, it is never just about keeping fit.

This sport gives me time to think, to pray, to thank God for all I have.

And as I run the race of life, i take heed of what it means to be able to take part in the sport of running…

I have to train hard, learn from others, eat well, and even when its a cold dark morning, keep on going. To get the best out of life, I need to run with purpose.

Faith. Life. Sport.
